Paris: What to expect from the City of Lights and Love

Paris’s reputation precedes the city itself. In 1828, the city began lighting the Champs-Élysées with gas lamps. As the first city in Europe to do so, it earned the nickname ‘La Ville-Lumière’ or the ‘City of Lights’. The tradition continues today, with Paris remaining one of the best-lit cities in Europe. Paris is a renowned city of love. France is synonymous with romance, and the city’s deep and rich history, recurring reference in popular culture and the soothing cadence of the French language lures those in search of their own romantic Parisian experience.

Here’s a guide on how to experience the celebrated city of lights and love.

- Food and wine – French people revere and savour food and dining. Fast and processed food is uncommon – rather, French people enjoy long, leisurely meals made from fresh produce. When in France, do as the French do, and take the time to enjoy one of the most exciting culinary cities in the world. As an added bonus, eating well in Paris does not have to be expensive. Grab a fresh baguette, some smelly and delicious cheese and a bottle of red for a simple – and quintessentially Parisian – meal. With some of the best chefs and vineyards in the world, splurging on a French fine dining experience is also money well spent.

- Fashion finds – Paris is the fashion capital of the world, which means that shopping (even if it’s just window shopping!) is an essential Paris experience. Parisian shopping is not just about Chanel and Cartier – venture outside of the mainstream and designer shops and see what you can pick up at one of Paris’ many flea markets. Or, marvel at the artistry of Paris’ haute-couture boutiques.

- History, culture and sightseeing – A trip to Paris is not complete without a visit to the museums, monuments and structures that represent Paris – and France’s – rich history and culture. Take in the views from the top of the Eiffel Tower or watch its spectacular light show. See the Mona Lisa in real life at the Louvre and marvel at the architectural majesty of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Paris is shrouded in an enchanting and captivating aura that attracts visitors from all corners of the world. To get bewitched by the lights and love of Paris for yourself, there are a number of cheap flights to Europe available. Flights to Paris will get you to the ‘City of Lights’ and the ‘City of Love’ – who knows what will happen once you get there!
