five best beaches in the Algarve, Portugal

For years, Portugal has been an exceptional travel destination, with areas like the Algarve proving to be popular with tourists from around the world. It’s easy to see why Algarve holidays are in demand; this beautiful region, which you can holiday in with Villa Plus, caters to just about every traveler’s tastes, thanks to its beaches, the majority of which are Blue Flag beaches.

So, without further ado, here are the five best beaches in the Algarve, Portugal.

Meia Praia

You can’t go to Algarve without trying out the beaches, and Meia Praia in Lagos is one of the best beaches in the Algarve.

Located in Lagos, which is around 15 minutes from the airport, its name actually means, ‘half beach’ in Portuguese. The long, spacious terrain, complete with sand dunes, has made it popular with tourists, families and surfers.

Praia do Carvalho

A much smaller, more intimate destination, this curved bay in Lagoa can only be accessed by some steps that have been cut directly into the rock faces that surround the beach, which means it’s not easily accessible by wheelchair users or people with small children.

If you can climb down the steps, this quiet, relaxed beach will be worth your time. It’s much less crowded and more laid-back than other, more spacious beaches.

Praia do Ançã

Located in central Algarve, this beach is actually a continuation of the beach at Quinta do Lago, and is well-known for its calm seas, sands and sand dunes. This area is very popular with families, and as well as having lifeguards on duty, the beach has sunbeds, sunshades and boats available to rent. It is one of the places that reminds me of some of the best beaches in Majorca.

If you’re brave or experienced enough you can indulge in a spot of water-skiing, and can have something to eat in Dois Passos, an excellent fish restaurant that is located nearby.

Praia se São Rafael

This beach can be found close to the resort of Sesmarias in Albufeira, and not only boasts gold sand and perfect blue water, it also has public toilets and showers, too.

Easily accessible to wheelchair users (there are disabled spaces in the car park) this beach is small, but mighty and boasts loungers, parasols and pedalos. You can hire these for a small fee.

Praia do Alvor

Located close to the popular golfing destination of Quinta do Lago, Praia do Alvor is renowned for its extremely calm waters, which have made it the prime place for kite-surfing in Algarve.

Visitors can rent kayaks and swim in the waters, or stop to view the large rock formations at the eastern end of the beach, known as Praia de Tres.
