How to Earn Money While Traveling As a Digital Nomad

Who knew that with a laptop, internet connection, and a bit of wanderlust, you could have the greatest gig in the world! What “gig” is that? It’s the life of a digital nomad! As a digital nomad, wanderlust runs through your veins and traveling is your life. So what that’s ultimately saying is that the typical office environment isn’t for you and seeking greener pastures is what brings you the most joy.

The great news about the digital nomad lifestyle is that more and more employers are embracing it and are either hiring more remote employees or are offering more remote opportunities for current employees. According to a report from the Society for Human Resources, 69% of businesses allowed their employees to work from home in 2019 and found that productivity increased and the overall morale of employees had drastically increased.

So the idea of the digital nomad lifestyle is not only appealing and beneficial to the wanderlust in you but businesses are greatly benefiting from it as well. The biggest perk, so to say, about the digital nomad lifestyle is the fact that it gives you the freedom and flexibility that office life doesn’t, even to some of the best beaches in the world.

Freedom and flexibility come in the form of being able to travel all over the globe and make money as long as you have internet connection… that doesn’t sound like too bad of a deal, right? Just imagine, a beach towel being your desk chair and your lap is your desk… If you feel like you would be productive in that type of “work” environment, then you have almost all the makings to be a digital nomad. You can even maximize your yoga practices as you travel around.

What Does It Take to Be a Digital Nomad?

At this point, you’re probably thinking “almost?” What else does it take to be a digital nomad is the question now…

Well, the answer to this question is discipline. As you know, being a digital nomad comes with an extreme amount of freedom and flexibility. You have the freedom to work wherever you want and whenever you want… but with that freedom, you have to practice discipline too.

The responsibility that comes with being a digital nomad is working while you travel. So in order for you to be able to fund your travels, you have to be disciplined enough to work, despite having the freedom to not do so.

How to Make Money As a Digital Nomad

At this point, you should have created an imaginary checklist of what it takes to be a digital nomad.

  • Wanderlust
  • Laptop
  • Discipline

If you’re able to mark those things off the list, you have all the makings to become a digital nomad and live the lifestyle. But if you’re part of the “adventurous generation,” you’ll need an additional checklist to be safe and healthy during your travels.

So the next step is to find the best ways for you to make money to maintain the lifestyle. Some of these jobs may interest you and some may not, and that’s okay because the great news about earning as a digital nomad is that your options are endless. Take a look at some of the most profitable ways to earn money as a digital nomad.

Share Your Knowledge By Creating Online Courses

Creating online courses is a great way to build passive income but it does require quite a bit of work upfront before you can just start to relax. Some of the work that you’ll probably be doing on the frontend include:

  • Creating your virtual classroom syllabus
  • Creating a reading list
  • Creating assignments and tests
  • Recording video lectures

You’ll want to be sure to create your online courses in areas of your expertise, for example, if you’re a dating or financial coach, that’s what you’ll want to base your online courses on. Platforms like Uscreen, Zeqr, and Udemy are great places to post your courses.

Flex Your Entrepreneurial Muscle By Building an Online Store

Building an online store is one of the most profitable ways to earn a steady income. Just think about how many people shop online in this day and age… online shopping has drastically transformed the retail industry and as a digital nomad, you have the opportunity to take part in the billion-dollar industry.

You would first need to find your niche and target audience to determine the types of products you want to sell, build and design your website, and market to your target audience. Once you build up a solid customer base, your business will start earning you passive income and you’ll have to do little to no work to maintain it, especially if you decide to use a dropshipper for fulfillment.

Work As a Data Entry Specialist

People tend to think that data entry work is just a matter of typing things on the computer… Well, in a nutshell, it is but it isn’t, if that makes any sense… With data entry, you’re being paid to enter information onto the computer but it requires accuracy and speed in typing, as well as the ability to remove and install software that’s pertinent to the job, and email correspondence.

You could say that it’s “easy” money but the speed and accuracy in typing is what makes it hard, but if you’re a whiz in speed and accuracy in typing, then data entry might be the job for you.

Express Your Creativity With Graphic Design

Maybe you’re someone who is very tech-savvy and knows the ins and outs of making a website look beautiful from a design and functionality standpoint… if you have that kind of knowledge, you have the potential to make top dollar!

There are so many businesses that need help in designing logos, websites, and marketing materials… your particular area of expertise is in very high demand. You have to understand that just because technology advances, that doesn’t mean that society has advanced with it or has the interest to advance with it.

When businesses don’t have the know-how for graphic design, they hire graphic designers to meet their business needs… the great news is that it’s not something that has to be done in-person or in an office… Again, as long as you have access to the internet and a laptop, you can be a graphic designer anywhere in the world!
